Description

IMG_5511LUSH is our top-shelf facial emollient, specifically formulated to firm, tighten and “lift” the skin. It is the ultimate serum for that “I gotta have your skin” look, that people won’t stop asking you about. LUSH contains a secret ingredient; pregnenolone, which is one of the body’s youth hormones. It is well-known for its protective activity against the aging and destructive effects of stress. Applied to the skin, it can help to prevent stress-induced wrinkles and support the regeneration of new, healthy skin cells. It has one very incredible benefit to the skin that not many people know about. When applied topically, it can have a “face-lifting” action. This effect is achieved in two ways; by improving circulation directly to the skin, and by an actual contraction of muscle-like cells in the skin.

Another special feature of LUSH is the perfect blend of protective fats/oils. In youth, the skin is rich in mostly saturated fatty acids (like those found in coconut oil, tallow, etc.) but as we age, the fat composition of the skin becomes more unsaturated. Unsaturated fats are chemically unstable and prone to oxidation, so the more of them present in your skin tissue, the more likely your skin is to become damaged by aging, stress, UV light, etc.

For example, the fatty acid; arachidonic acid, is present in the skin tissue and is mainly metabolized via the inflammatory cyclooxygenase (COX) pathway, where it turns into inflammatory prostaglandins E(2), F(2α), and D(2). At very low concentrations, they help to maintain skin homeostasis; however, at high concentrations, they cause skin inflammation and hyperproliferation of keratinocytes, which causes fibrosis (scar tissue).

In order to prevent this derangement of fatty acid composition in the skin, to preserve the skin’s youthfulness, we need to support the skin’s saturated to unsaturated fat ratio and prevent the oxidation of any unsaturated fats present in the skin. This can be achieved by avoiding polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the diet but also in skincare products. Any and all skincare products containing PUFAs should be avoided, which consist mostly of plant/vegetable oils like almond, sesame, borage, evening primrose, etc. Instead, the focus should be on the anti-inflammatory, anti-toxic saturated fatty acid-rich oils like tallow, coconut, cacao, etc, which protect the skin from stress, inflammation, and aging. Lastly, consuming/using antioxidant fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K2 will help to mitigate any possible oxidation of fats in the skin tissue, helping to persevere the skin’s integrity.

As you can see, LUSH works at a root level to prevent skin aging by regulating the two dominant factors in skin aging; stress and inflammation. All in all, what you will find in LUSH is a well-thought-out combination of clinically-proven ingredients in a remarkable and unparalleled beauty product that you won’t find elsewhere.1,2

Our Ingredients

Organic Grass-fed Tallow: Rich in the oh-so-important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K2, tallow acts as a replenishing moisturizer that supports the skin’s natural moisture. Despite what you may think, tallow is not greasy and won’t clog your pores; in fact, it will help keep your pores small and balance your skin’s oil production. Tallow is rich in vitamin A, which is essential for regulating sebum production (skin oil). Most people are lacking vitamin A since stress and sun exposure depletes vitamin A (not to mention, most people don’t eat enough vitamin A-rich foods). This initially leads to dry skin, which then causes the body to overproduce sebum as a corrective mechanism, leading to dry/oily skin and enlarged pores. Tallow helps to replenish the skin with the essential fat-soluble vitamins, which improve skin appearance, texture, and hydration while improving the skin’s resistance to stress, toxins, and pollution.

Organic Cacao Butter: The divine aroma of cacao butter is usually enough to suffice to apply to the skin. But did you know it also helps to improve skin health? Cacao butter is much more than a moisturizer; it contains stearic acid, which has many therapeutic benefits to the skin. Stearic acid actually helps to reduce the overproduction of glucocorticoid hormones like cortisol, which is very aging to the skin and causes wrinkles. Cacao butter is also very healing to damaged, injured, or inflamed skin. For example, studies have found that stearic acid-containing skin creams substantially and reproducibly lessen the severity and progression of skin lesions such as burns and wounds. This effect would also apply to acne, eczema, and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Organic Squalane: Squalene is a PUFA-free oil derived from cane, and is actually a lipid that is naturally occurring and produced by your own skin cells. Applied to the skin, it mimics your skin’s natural oils, making it one of the healthiest, non-toxic emollients. It is also a powerful antioxidant, which has anti-carcinogen, anticancer, and antitumor properties. Our squalene is derived from the cane plant and is hydrogenated into squalane (with an “a” not an “e”), which stabilizes its molecular structure. Research has found that squalane can help treat oily skin, acne, eczema, and has a general anti-aging effect by supporting collagen production, resulting in more youthful skin. Squalane appears to be critical for reducing free radical oxidative damage to the skin.

USP Cholesterol (5%): Topical cholesterol may attenuate hypersensitivity by normalizing secretion of hormonally active cortisol from the skin. Cortisol secretion on the skin is also known to break down skin tissue leading to wrinkling and aging. 8

Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate): Vitamin A is one of the most important nutrients for healthy skin. It regulates sebum production, it facilitates the production of anti-stress youth hormones in the skin like pregnenolone and progesterone, and it is essential for skin immunity. Studies have found that skin tissue that is rich in vitamin A is more resilient to UV damage and infection. Vitamin A also helps to prevent the oxidation of fat in the skin tissue, preventing age spots or lipofuscin. Topical vitamin A inhibits the aging effects of the Sun. Specifically speaking, it inhibits the UV-induced breakdown of collagen and protects against UV-induced decreases in collagen expression. In other words, it protects your skin from becoming aged or wrinkled by the sun, this way you can reap the beauty and health benefits of sunlight while mitigating the downsides.

Pearl Powder: Pearl is one of the well-known tonic herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. It is historically used for treating various skin-related disorders due to its abundant antioxidant, proteins, and mineral contents. Ancient Chinese text accredits pearl powder for the age-less appearance of oriental women and their “pearl-like” skin tone. As it turns out, this may not be folklore; studies have found pearl powder to possess many anti-aging qualities to the skin. For example, various studies have found that pearl powder supplementation substantially increases a person’s antioxidant capacity. This is important since oxidative stress is at the root of skin aging; more antioxidants = less oxidative damage. Studies have found that pearl powder accelerates wound repair and skin regeneration. Additionally, research has found that pearl powder enhances cell adhesion and tissue regeneration of skin fibroblasts. Pearl powder also has a satisfactory moisturizing effect on skin and can significantly reduce the activation of tyrosinase and free radicals, which can increase the skin’s resistance to aging. 13,14,15

Bio-Identical Pregnenolone: At last, we arrive to pregnenolone, the star ingredient in LUSH. As stated in the description, pregnenolone has a “face-lifting” effect when applied topically. It dramatically increases microcirculation to the skin tissue and stimulates muscle-like cells in the skin tissue to contract, which results in a noticeable tightening, firming effect. Pregnenolone concentration in the skin tissue is also essential for maintaining overall skin youthfulness. It has the primary job of inhibiting the destructive effects of cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone that elevates when pregnenolone and progesterone are deficient. It causes wrinkles and skin aging by catabolizing and breaking down skin tissue. Applying pregnenolone to the skin daily; through the regular use of LUSH, is an intelligent way to put the breaks on skin aging and support more youthful skin. *sourced from wild

Organic Blue Tansy Extract: More than anything else, blue tansy (also known as blue chamomile) smells heavenly. This medicinal flower has become a popular ingredient in a wide variety of natural skincare products, mostly for its splendor aroma and beautiful blue hue. There isn’t much research on its beneficial effects but we do know it contains two powerful constituents;

  • Sabinene: a bioactive oil present of blue tansy with powerful anti-inflammatory effects. 16
  • Camphor: this transparent compound has antiseptic action, capable of reducing bacterial overgrowth and preventing skin infection. 17

Tips for Use

Apply a dime-sized amount to a freshly cleansed face and neck then gently massage in. It should be applied and worn beneath/before any makeup or other beauty products.

If your Lush arrives in a more liquid form, that is normal during hot summer and spring months. Since Lush is derived of saturated fat-rich oils, and free of toxic PUFA, it is very heat stable. As an emollient, Lush is meant to turn into a liquid form once touched. It starts in a semi-solid, creamy form, but will turn liquid once put into your palm and applied to the face. If you’d like to bring Lush back to a more solid form, simply place it in the fridge for 10-30 minutes. The cacao butter in Lush contains a high stearic acid content, which gives it a high melting point. But it also makes it slower to solidify again, and requires cooler temps. If your Lush is melted, leaving it in room temp will not bring it back solid, it must be in temps below 70 F, ideally between 60-64.

Storage Tips

Additionally, Lush is an oil based product, which will melt when temperatures get too high. During summer months, and particularly hot days, we suggest tracking your package via USPS until they provide the estimated day/time of delivery, this way packages can be retrieved immediately. All packages are kept in A/C up to the point of delivery, so the mailbox is the most vulnerable place for potential melting. When retrieved, to be on the safe side, do NOT open your products right away. Instead, allow them to cool at least to room temperature, or place in the fridge for  5-10 minutes before opening. Once ready to open, store in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight.
