Benefits of Pearl+

There are two components to Pearl+, the anti-inflammatory marine collagen proteins, and calming mineral-rich pearl powder. Below we will focus mostly on the effects of marine collagen since we discuss in great detail the many benefits of Pearl powder on this page HERE.

In general, collagen peptides are widely used and consumed today in the form of dietary supplements and cosmetics for their beautifying and soothing actions. Research shows that a combination of marine collagen peptides, along side antioxidants such as selenium (found abundantly in shellfish) is an effective and safe supplement that can improve various properties of the skin. 1

Delay Skin Aging: Studies have verified that supplementation of marine collagen can exert an anti-aging effect. Specifically speaking, supplementing with marine collagen peptides increases epidermal thickness, prominently increases the number and activity of fibroblast (skin cells) and also improves SOD (superoxide dismutase) activity, a potent antioxidant that can protect the skin from free radical damage. Additionally, both histological and biochemical analysis have shown that consuming marine collagen had the potential to inhibit collagen loss and collagen fragmentation in chronological aged skin. Specifically speaking, supplementing with marine collagen can inhibit age-related increased collagen degradation through attenuating the expression of enzymes that effect tissue degradation and breakdown. 2, 3

Wound Healing: In vitro experiments have found that the use of marine collagen peptides can provide wound healing effects. In study, taking marine collagen significantly improved scratch closure. In other experiments, marine collagen peptides enhanced the process of wound healing in deep cuts, concluding that supplementing with marine collagen can have promising benefit in wound care. Glycine, an amino acid found abundantly in collagen protein is known for its anti-fibrotic effects, which can support normal tissue remodeling and repair. These mechanism provide benefit beyond just regenerating wounded tissue from a cut or scratch, but can also help prevent skin/scalp aging in general. In nearly all scalp and skin diseases, the skin tissue is being injured chronically from inflammation. This impairs skin cell function and regeneration resulting in aged, fibrotic skin that can cause early wrinkles and baldness. 4

Hair Health: There is growing evidence of the beneficial effects of a marine collagen supplementation  for treating hair loss. A few studies have demonstrated the ability of oral marine collagen intake in increasing the growth of terminal and vellus (peach fuzz) hairs, increasing the diameter of terminal and vellus hairs, and decreasing hair loss. These effects where shown in both men and women. There are likely many mechanisms that help achieve these effects. The first is likely related to the anti-stress effects of the amino acids in marine collagen. The classic stress hormone is known to cause hair loss in numerous ways. The glycine in marine collagen can agonize GABA and thus reduce cortisol. Marine collagen is also anti-inflammatory, and inflammation of the scalp is a key feature in the pathology of hair loss.5 6

Metabolism: Marine collagen use has been found to help positively modulate glucose and lipid metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In study it was found that patients treated with marine collagen peptides had reduced levels of fasting blood glucose, human glycated hemoglobin A1c (GHbA1c), fasting blood insulin, total triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and free-fatty acids. Additionally, nitric oxide levels also decreased, which is an inflammatory mediator that elevates under stress. 7

Digestion: Collagen protein makes up about 30 percent of all the proteins in the human body and is main component of connective tissues, including the lining of the intestines. Marine collagen is specifically rich in anti-inflammatory the amino acids proline and glycine, which can help reduce intestinal inflammation and support digestion. When glycine is deficient in the diet, or consumed disproportionally to amino acids like tryptophan, cystine and methothione the body can overproduce cortisol, which can catabolize tissue in the body, potentially attributing to leaky gut. In fact, it is well known that stress, and cortisol specifically are implicated in the pathogenesis of leaky gut (intestinal permeability). In addition to these effects, glycine found in marine collagen is needed for phase 2 liver detoxification, which drives glucuronidation (the process of making toxins water soluble to be excreted from the kidneys). When phase 2 liver detoxification is impaired, toxins and hormones like estrogen build in the tissues attributing to leakiness in the intestines and stress. Additionally, glycine also supports the central nervous system and promoting relaxation, which is needed to support the parasympathetic (rest and digest) branch of the nervous system.

How To Use

Pearl+ is soluble in both hot and cold liquids. We suggest adding 1-2 scoops to your favorite smoothie recipes, coffee, teas or tonics. Studies show that collagen and gelatin are safe to consume in amounts upwards to 50 grams daily.

Use liberally to balance your intake of excitatory amino acids like tryptophan, methothione and cystine. The glycine and proline in Pearl+ are less commonly consumed by people, but have an important inhibitory effects to the excitatory amino acids, which are abundant in the diet. Getting adequate glycine through collagen supplementation can help reduce cortisol stimulated by excess consumption of tryptophan, thus having an anti-stress and anti-inflammatory effect.

  4. Kseniya (verified owner)

I can’t stand the taste and SMELL of this— I really tried to like it. I’ve tried mixing it with different drinks including smoothies to hide the smell but I still can feel it.

  5. Ilona (verified owner)

I am pregnant and I am excited to see how it will benefit our baby. I will say it really does not have a taste once you mix it with a juice. Mixed with water, I taste it but its not that bad.
