Most electrolyte mixes today brag about being “sugar-free.” But here’s the truth: your body needs both sugar and salt to properly generate and sustain energy, and mitigate stress.

That’s why Replenish is intentionally crafted with the synergistic balance of regenerative organic cane sugar + pure mineral salts — fueling glucose transport and rapid electrolyte absorption, the way our physiology intended.

Sugar + Salt (why it’s important)

To best explain the synergist relationship between sugar and salt, we need to understand their basic relationship to stress and energy production. Ray Peat once explained, “stress could be defined as the perceived need for sugar.” In other words, stress wastes energy and therefore the depletion or loss of sugar; as the primary substrate of energy metabolism, is the first response in the body in the face of stress. As we endure a stressor; be that from intense exercise, sleep deprivation, breastfeeding, or even psychological stress, our body quickly uses up energy to meet the demands of that stress. Once we deplete the available glucose, our brain gets this signal and triggers a release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which mobilize glycogen to be turned into glucose again for energy demands. At the same time, our body will release another stress hormone; known as aldosterone, a mineralocorticoid that in short, leads to the reabsorption of sodium (leading to edema), and the loss of potassium, calcium, and magnesium. While consuming these electrolytes without sugar will provide some protective, anti-stress effects, the benefits could be maximized if accompanied by sugar.

The synergistic physiology of sugar and electrolytes involves several direct and indirect relationships. Starting at the top, glucose provides immediate energy to the cells which fuels active transport mechanisms in kidney and intestinal cells, helping to retain and utilize minerals effectively. In simply terms, de-energized cells lead to stressed cells, which in turn lead to poorly mineralized cells. Stress is what initiates the loss of minerals by stimulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis; CRH → ACTH → cortisol → aldosterone. By consuming sugar during stress, we can halt the chain reaction of stress hormones in its tract, preventing the aldosterone-induced mineral excretion (less potassium/magnesium loss). Additionally, consuming sugar with salt improves intestinal absorption since glucose accelerates sodium uptake, which in turn promotes healthy water retention and electrolyte absorption.

Looking at things form the other side of the relationship, salt promotes better utilization of glucose. It stimulate yours cells to use oxygen better, working with your thyroid to enhance the oxidation of sugar, producing more carbon dioxide. This is an important, rarely if at all discussed point. CO2 has many interactions with minerals. Fundamentally, CO2 is inhibitory (anti-excitation), so it maintains resting potentials and prevents the loss of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

In summary, while many electrolyte formulas today market being sugar-free, this is typically for no other reason than trend and hype, but most certainly not physiology. The physiological fact is, sugar in an electrolyte formula will produce optimal hydrating and energizing results.

The One-to-One Ratio

The 2-to-1 calcium-to-magnesium ratio (2:1) was first suggested by a French magnesium researcher by the name Jean Durlach. He warned against excessive calcium relative to magnesium, as magnesium keeps calcium in check.Once calcium enters a cell, it must be tightly regulated. Magnesium competes with calcium for binding sites on proteins and membranes, preventing excess calcium activation of enzymes that can damage mitochondria or DNA. In this way, magnesium protects against toxicity and excitation caused be excessive intracellular calcium.

In simple terms, it is more important to not exceed your calcium intake by more than twice your magnesium intake. A great intake of calcium to magnesium can be harmful, but a lower calcium-to-magnesium ratio is thus safe, such as a one-to-one ratio or even less in some times of life or therapy.

We use a 1:1 for the fact that in more cases than not, a person will struggle to get adequate magnesium than they will calcium. As a holistic lifestyle brand, rather than supplement company, we encourage adequate nutrition via diet, and most in our community get adequate calcium intake from their diets. Furthermore, adequate vitamin D levels lessens the need for calcium, and we strongly encourage adequate sun exposure, and supporting vitamin D status, making the need for a 2:1 ratio less practical. Magnesium; on the other hand, is less abundant in today’s food due to poor soil quality, but magnesium is wasted by stress and retained poorly under hypothyroid conditions. Additionally, the common suggested RDA for magnesium does not take this into consideration, and like most RDA’s does not reflect optimal conditions. An optimal daily intake for magnesium is 11mg/kg of bodyweight, which can be difficult to get without supplementation, and very good thyroid function. (when thyroid function is good, magnesium is retained better and not wasted by stress as rapidly). Lastly, in stress and hypothyroidism, calcium metabolism can be deranged, making calcium potentially harmful, and more so in the presence of a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium needs tend to increase during stress and hypothyroidism though, making a ratio that favors higher magnesium over calcium but not exceeding, safer and more protective.

Tips/Storage

Replenish is made specially without common manufacturing “flow agents” and “anti-caking” agents. This is intentional as most of the materials used for this can be irritating to the gut lining and cause a variety of allergic reactions in sensitive people especially. Knowing this, there is a possibility for Replenish to clump or harden over time. Acerola powder and freeze dried fruit powders are particularly hydroscopic. In our experience, this process takes a couple of months, and with Replenish being a month supply, you should go through it before this happens. In the event you are not using it quickly enough, you can probably prevent clumping by just shaking it once a day to keep it from settling and hardening. The product is fit with a moisture absorbing packet, but follow take these things into consideration for maximum shelf life.

I feel wonderful and my mood is so much more stable and have amazing energy! And I’m in my first trimester! Highly recommend

  2. peteyp210 (verified owner)

This is the best tasting electrolyte powder but it also hydrates better than anything I’ve tried. I used it during my pregnancy and now also in postpartum to support breastfeeding. Highly recommend trying it out!
