Description

Shilajit belongs to a noble class of traditional medicines. Historically, it was available only to the ruling classes and the wealthy. In fact, there are noble mentions of Shilajit, tracing far back as ancient Greece. The great Greek philosopher; Aristotle, mentions the use of a substance called “mumie” or “moomiyo”, which is thought to be shilajit. However, the origins of shilajit trace back even further, to ancient Indian medicine. Legend has it that shilajit was a gift directly from Shiva that was given to Chandra Varma; the King of India, to restore his youth and vigor.

For thousands of years, shilajit has been used in the Ayurvedic Medicine as a “Rasayana” or a tonic for improving vitality, immunity and resistance to stress. Today, modern research shows that Shilajit has potentially enormous and life-changing benefits, with little to no risk. Before we get into shilajit’s impressive benefits, let’s quickly discuss what it is exactly.

What is Shilajit?

Shilajit is an exudation, mineral-resin from rock; typically mountains, that occurs during hot, sunny days. It is naturally occurring and native to many parts of the world, including Russia and Tibet, but India was the first place where Shilajit’s tremendous therapeutic value was recognized and utilized.
In its natural form, shilajit is a sticky, tar-like resin that is full of trace minerals, fulvic and humic acids. These components in particular that provide the majority of Shilajit’s medicinal qualities. 1

Shilajit Benefits

Nootropic: Shilajit at a dose of 50 mg/kg, has a significant nootropic activity as shown by passive avoidance learning and retention. It was found that processed shilajit and its active constituents (fulvic acids), significantly increased the learning acquisition and memory retention in old albino rats. (dose: 12 tables for 130 lb person) 2 3

Supports Fertility: In Ayurveda, Shilajit is considered an aphrodisiac, and there is science to support it. It is well known that Shilajit use can return the libido of people to a level of teenagers with regular use. Shilajit increases the cellular energy responsible for sexual, spiritual power and renewal of vitality. In experiment, the administration of Shilajit to rats showed a remarkable increase in the number of sperm of the epidydimus in male rats and in the number of ovulation induced rats in females. 4

Anti-Fungal: Studies have found that a methanolic extract ((extracted in methanol)) of Shilajit at the concentration of 5000µg/ml has an excellent inhibitory activity against certain pathogenic fungus, particularly alternaria cajani. 5

Protection against Mast Cells Degranulation: Mast cell degranulation is a cause of inflammation and fibrosis. Degranulated mast cells in the scalp is a known cause of balding and scalp fibrosis. They are implicated in almost all chronic inflammatory conditions, including allergies. It has been found that the effects of the fulvic acids found in Shilajit provided statistically significant protection to antigen-induced degranulation of sensitized mast cells. 6
Free Radical Scavenger and Antioxidant: Antioxidants can safely neutralize a free radical without becoming a free radical themself. One of the many beneficial mechanisms  of Shilajit is its powerful antioxidant effects. Not only can Shilajit scavenge free radicals, it has the added benefit of being able to cross the blood-brain barrier. Research shows that Shilajit can successfully scavenge & protect against effect against the pro-inflammatory paramagnetic nitric oxide (NO). These effects are dose dependant, meaning, the higher the concentration, the stronger the antioxidant effect. 7 8
Anti-Anxiety: Studies show that at a modest dose of 10 mg/kg, shilajit has significant anti-anxiety activity as proved by elevated plus-maze test, which is comparable to that of diazepam (1 mg/kg). (dose: 3 tablets for 130 lb person) 9

Antidiabetic: High blood sugar is a growing health problem today. Millions of people around the world have some degree of chronically high blood sugar and are progressing on to diabetes. Shilajit has actually long been used for the prevention and treatment of diabetes in Ayurvedic medicine. Today, modern research has verified this application. In study, Shilajit (50-100 mg/kg) was found to attenuate the hyperglycemic response. 10

Immunomodulatory: Research has found that Shilajit and its constituents are effective immunomodulators and can act essentially as cell growth factors in both normal and tumour cells by maintaining membrane integrity. It was found that the white blood cell activity was increased by shilajit supplementation. This activity was dose dependant and increased as the dose of shilajit and time of exposure was increased, meaning its immune-enhancing effects continue to improve over time. 11 12
Anti-Inflammatory/Pain Relief: Shilajit has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that help to decrease and relieve joint inflammation and pain. Shilajit not only helps reduce inflammation but its  effects on the neurotransmitters in the brain also seem to help relieve joint pain. Mice studies found that 50-200 mg/kg of Shilajit exerted an analgesic effect, with a significant effect during the first 60 min. (dose: 12-60 tablets for 130 lb person) 13
Antiviral Activity: Various studies show that Shilajit is endowed with both immunopotentiating and viral load reducing properties. 14 15

Anti-Stress: Shilajit has many trace minerals that are known to be crucial to a healthy, physiological response to stress. The body tends to use up more nutrients during a stress response, especially trace minerals. Studies have found that Shilajit improves the ability to handle stress, with one reason likely being related to its high level of key minerals. 16

Metabolic Support: Shilajit has fulvic minerals that are essential for a healthy metabolism. Shilajit is also considered an adaptogen, which at basic, means it helps to support the body’s metabolism. The basic job or goal of the metabolism is to regulate the body and keep physiological balance. There are thousands of mechanisms involved in metabolism, but the end goal is homeostasis. Of the many processes, nearly all of them require minerals. For example, the electron transport chain, which is the last process of aerobic respiration (glucose metabolism) where electrons are transported through the inner mitochondrial membrane to molecular oxygen for respiration. Copper is an essential key element for this process, as it is required for the propagation of optimal enzymatic activity for electron transfer in the cell. Shilajit is not only a source of copper, but countless other minerals and elements that are needed for metabolic processes.

So I’ve tried a bunch of brands of shilajit as well as purely fulvic/Humic minerals. None of them have touched the benefits I’ve felt from this shilajit. I’m 23 weeks pregnant and chasing around a 19 month old, I am beyond exhausted. I take one dose and I come back to life, seriously. It’s not a crazy caffeine energy or high, it’s just pure clean energy and a feeling of overall stability is restored. Again, I’ve never felt a slight difference with anything else I’ve tried, but this product has been immensely helpful especially in my current season!

Love shilajit! I definitely notice more energy – especially less of that midday “slump.” Noticed a big difference in libido too! Excited to see if when we get pregnant again if I’ll notice a difference! I didn’t put a ton of stress on minerals my last pregnancy because I didn’t know any better!

I didn’t realize how much shilajit was helping my energy levels until I skipped my last order. I hadn’t had it in a few weeks and couldn’t figure out why I was feeling like I needed a nap every day and then remembered I wasn’t taking shilajit!
Definitely going to start ordering it again because I’ve noticed such a drastic difference!

I’ve tried three different brands of shilajit and they all worked extremely well. Ultimately it comes down to feeling a stronger connection to this brand and my trust in their quality. I also buy majority of my supplements from Noelle and her husband at this point so streamlining them makes it a lot easier and affordable.

I’m currently waiting for my Shilajit and have been out for almost a week now and I can definitely feel a difference energy wise. Shilajit tends to balance my energy levels throughout my day and I also enjoy the unspoken/“invisible” benefits of it as well in terms of detoxification.
